As humans, we try to stay away from the word “problems”. We constantly work to prevent problems, while trying to push our business to greatness. However, issues are inevitable and often emerge when we least expect it. Here is an effective problem-solving model and what to do each step of the way:

  1. Point out the issue. The most important step to solve a problem is to acknowledge that it is present. Figure out the problem.
  2. Get the story from all sides. Understanding the problem from all sides of the spectrum is important to put together an accurate chain of events.
  3. List solution options. You’re not going to come up with an answer to your problem in five seconds (not even five minutes!). Make a list of all of the possible solutions, even the ones that seem outlandish.
  4. Evaluate and select an option. Look at your list and identify one (or two) solutions that would work best to solve your problem.
  5. Have it in writing. Write down your solution and have all parties agree to it.
  6. Monitor the solution. Make sure you keep a hand in the solution process. Monitor it every day and make sure it is working. If it does not seem to alleviate the issue, go back to square one and try again.

It is inevitable that a problem will arise in your dealership. Address it and make sure it is resolved before it becomes something bigger.
